Doula and Bereavement Services
About

Hello there!

I am Rachel Veres, an NRP-certified home birth doula.  I believe that you are fully capable of birthing your baby.  I offer a spiritually oriented and naturally minded approach to birth preparation and labor support.  I also walk with mothers and families through miscarriage, stillbirth, and early infant loss.

My venture into the birth world began in September 2021 before my husband even asked me to marry him. I felt it was important to start preparing for pregnancy and birth, and I wanted to use the time before marriage to do it. It began with a lifestyle shift into the natural and holistic, which brought me to my first book about birth: Ina May's Spiritual Midwifery. I cried through nearly every birth story, and I heard this whisper in the back of my mind asking me if I were being called to birth work.

In January 2023, I attended my first home birth.  I was changed forever.

I believe birth can be joyful, peaceful, and gentle, regardless of the circumstances we are given. I believe, for most of us, it is out hero's journey, and we can decide how we choose to rise to it.

Little Bird is the meaning of my first child's name. All my bereavement support is her legacy and truly her work through my hands.

"In order to be fully alive, it is necessary for us to participate actively in what we do, to bring our consciousness, feelings, sense of responsibility, and decision-making ability to bear as fully as possible in every action of our daily lives, and especially in an event as momentous as birth."

~Rahima Baldwin Dancy

  • Doula: A woman knowledgeable in birth and comfort techniques who supports women physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and with education and resources throughout their childbearing year.

  • Naturally minded: Birth is designed to work on its own; women are fully capable of birthing their own babies.  Each additional intervention can be used on an as-needed basis with an understanding of it and autonomy in the decision to pursue it.  I can help navigate choices that support a thriving childbearing year: good nutrition, loving movement, and connection to your baby and partner. I underwent a massive paradigm shift in my own lifestyle a few years ago, and I can help you navigate living well in an age that makes it so difficult.

  • Decision Making and Advice: All decisions for you and your baby are yours and yours alone.  We'll work together to explore your hopes, fears, and expectations of your birth and develop a birth plan.  I guide families using the BRAN method of decision making and can provide education and resources as you navigate this journey.

  • Intuition and PreparationPhysical preparation is important, and, as your doula, I have a collection of physical preparation resources at your disposal.  But birth is just as much of a mental task.  Throughout our journey together, I can offer guidance in mental control and honing your intuition.

  • Birth as a Hero's Journey: I believe birth is a hero's journey for women and initiation for spiritual transformation.  It is the transition from the first phase of womanhood (maiden) to the second (mother).  It is the decision of each woman if she rises to the challenge.

  • NRP certified: While I am not a medical professional or practicing midwife, I am certified in advanced neonatal resuscitation through the American Academy of Pediatrics to lend an extra pair of trained hands to your midwife if needed and help you understand what is happening if your baby needs a little extra help taking those first few breaths.  Click here to view my ecard.

  • Doula Family L.E.G.A.C.Y.: This in depth doula certification program is led by a leading local doula with 40 years of industry experience. We are required to complete 60 hours of online lectures, a 6-week live education session, and a 3-day hands-on intensive, become certified in NRP and complete childbirth education and lactation classes, attend three births, study the full childbearing year and birth assistance techniques, and, most importantly, develop our intuition so that we can respond with the best physical and emotional support in the moment.  We have lifetime access to our doula community and continuing education, and we provide backup support for each other's clients.  For more information, click here.  (My certification is in progress.)

  • Service area: Northwest Indiana, greater Chicagoland, and the Joliet areas.
